may

it’s may again and
i’m ready to be disappointed
platitudes curl around my tongue
and once more i am standing
in front of a japanese painting
of a flower waiting to bloom
i’ve traded miniskirts for khakis
and a war that has never been fought
flies off the paper and
into my mouth
giving me a toothache
it’s cloudy but i want sunglasses
to hide the curiosity
in my eyes
