a lifetime ago

even the dogs lived on pancakes

but they didn’t seem to mind

he turned ten into twenty at the otb

and spent it on sweet wine

 pushed, schemed, scrounged

his mangled fingers

casually turning the pages

of franny and zooey

his smile faded a little each day

his eyes dulled with the junkie drama

but at least he hung on

long enough to see his horse

finish first and buy the bar

a round
